Project Abstract

Abstract
This study sought to investigate the extent of the availability and use of instructional materials in teaching and learning social studies in Aba Education Zone, Abia State. The research was motivated by the crucial role instructional materials play in enhancing teaching and learning outcomes, particularly in a subject like social studies that requires practical applications and real-life examples for effective understanding. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive analysis. Data was collected through questionnaires administered to social studies teachers in selected schools within Aba Education Zone, as well as through interviews with key stakeholders such as school administrators and curriculum developers. The findings revealed that while there is a general awareness of the importance of instructional materials in teaching social studies, there are significant challenges in terms of availability and utilization. Many teachers reported a lack of access to adequate instructional materials, with most relying on traditional methods of instruction such as chalkboard and textbooks. Furthermore, the study identified several factors contributing to the limited availability and use of instructional materials in teaching social studies, including inadequate funding for materials, lack of training on how to effectively integrate instructional materials into lessons, and insufficient support from educational authorities. Despite these challenges, the study also highlighted some positive practices in certain schools where teachers have made efforts to create their own instructional materials or adapt existing resources to suit their teaching needs. Based on the findings, the study recommends several strategies to improve the availability and use of instructional materials in teaching social studies in Aba Education Zone. These include increasing funding for materials, providing training and professional development opportunities for teachers on instructional design and technology integration, and fostering collaboration between teachers, schools, and educational stakeholders to share resources and best practices. By addressing these challenges and implementing these recommendations, schools in Abia State can enhance the quality of social studies education and ultimately improve learning outcomes for students.

Project Overview

This study examined Extent of the Availability and use of Instructional Materials in Teaching and Learning Social Studies in Aba Education Zone, Abia State. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The study determined the extentinstructional materials are available for teaching and learning of social studies, the extent instructional materials are available for teaching and learning social studies, the extent the available instructional materials are used for teaching of social studies and in what ways can instructional materials be provided and utilized in teaching and learning social studies. A total number of 8,475 Social Studies Teachers and JSS2 Social Studies Students were selected for the study through simple random sampling technique in the nine local government education authorities (LGEA) in the education zone. Four research questions and Four hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. Instrument for data collection was questionnaire developed by the researcher titledβ€œAvailability and Use of Instructional Material in Teaching and Learning Questionnaire” (AUIMTLQ) which contain 87 items. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation (SD) while t-test statistic was used in testing the 4 null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that instructional materials are not sufficiently supplied for teaching and learning of social studies. Also in most cases, teachers do not make use of the available instructional materials in teaching their lessons. Based on the findings of the research, it was recommended that instructional materials must be provided and utilized by executors of educational polices in order to achieve the set educational objective of social studies.
