Project Abstract

Home video viewership among secondary school students in selected public schools is a research project that aims to explore the patterns and trends of home video consumption among teenagers. The study focuses on understanding how secondary school students in selected public schools engage with home videos, including movies, TV shows, and online content. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive analysis of home video viewership among secondary school students. The quantitative aspect of the study will involve the distribution of surveys to a sample of students to gather information on their viewing habits, frequency of watching videos, preferred genres, platforms used, and the impact of home videos on their academic performance and social behavior. In addition to the surveys, qualitative data will be collected through focus group discussions and individual interviews with selected students. These qualitative methods will allow for a deeper exploration of the reasons behind students' preferences, the role of home videos in their lives, and any potential concerns related to excessive viewing. The study will also investigate the influence of parental guidance and school policies on students' home video viewership. By examining the level of parental involvement in regulating their children's viewing habits and the extent to which schools address the issue of excessive screen time, the research aims to provide insights into the support systems available to students in managing their media consumption. Furthermore, the project will explore the impact of home video viewership on students' academic performance and social interactions. By analyzing the correlation between time spent watching videos and academic achievement, as well as examining the influence of media content on students' behavior and attitudes, the study seeks to uncover both the positive and negative effects of home video consumption on secondary school students. Overall, this research project on home video viewership among secondary school students in selected public schools will contribute to a better understanding of teenagers' media consumption habits and provide valuable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers in promoting healthy viewing habits and maximizing the educational benefits of home videos for students.

Project Overview

The study investigated the influence of home television viewing on academic achievement of children in upper Basic Education Level in Kaduna State. The study established the influence of televisions viewing on the pupils’ language development and achievement in basic science. The study also determines the influence of televisions viewing on pupils’ numeracy development and achievement in social studies. The study was guided by four research questions and four formulated null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of probability. The design of the study was an ex-post facto survey design. The area of the study was Kaduna State of Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of all the children in the upper basic level of education in schools in Kaduna State. Multistage and stratified random sampling techniques were used in selecting the 320 pupils that were used for the study. A researcher-developed instrument called ‘pupils television viewing identification questionnaire’ (PTVIQ). The instrument was face validated by three experts in the department of vocational Teacher education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The internal consistency reliability coefficient obtained using Cronbach alpha method was 0.67. Data were collected by recording the continuous assessment scores of pupils on Mathematics, English languages, Basic Science and Social Studies. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while t-test analysis was used in testing the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study included: that home television viewers scored higher than the non-television viewers on Basic English continuous assessment tests; the home television viewers scored higher than the non-television viewers on basic Mathematics; at p<0.05, there was a significant difference between the mean scores of home television viewers and non-television viewers on Social Studies tests. It was recommended that the viewing of television in homes and schools especially on academic activities should be encouraged by parents and teachers to enhance pupils learning.
