Project Abstract

Abstract
This research project delves into the complex relationships between authority, legitimacy, and violence within the context of Hezbollah, a prominent political and military organization in Lebanon. The study seeks to reexamine traditional understandings of Hezbollah by critically analyzing the sources of its authority, the bases of its legitimacy, and the role of violence in its operations. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach that combines insights from political science, sociology, and international relations, this research aims to provide a nuanced and comprehensive understanding of Hezbollah's dynamics. One key aspect of the project is the exploration of Hezbollah's sources of authority. While the organization is often characterized as a "state within a state" in Lebanon, the nature and extent of its authority remain subject to debate. Through an analysis of Hezbollah's organizational structure, leadership dynamics, and relationship with its constituency, this research aims to shed light on the sources of the organization's authority and the mechanisms through which it is exercised. Moreover, the study examines the bases of Hezbollah's legitimacy, both within Lebanon and on the international stage. Hezbollah's legitimacy has been a subject of contention, with some viewing the organization as a legitimate resistance movement and others as a terrorist group. By examining Hezbollah's ideological foundations, its social welfare activities, and its role in Lebanese politics, this research seeks to unpack the multiple dimensions of the organization's legitimacy and the factors that contribute to its resilience and support. A central focus of the research is the role of violence in Hezbollah's operations. As a hybrid actor engaged in both political and military activities, Hezbollah's use of violence raises important questions about the boundaries of legitimate political action. By analyzing Hezbollah's military capabilities, its involvement in conflicts in the region, and its strategies of resistance, this research aims to provide insights into the ways in which violence shapes and is shaped by the organization's authority and legitimacy. Overall, this research project seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of Hezbollah as a complex and multifaceted actor in the Middle East. By rethinking traditional narratives and exploring the interplay between authority, legitimacy, and violence, this study aims to provide new insights into the dynamics of Hezbollah's power and influence both domestically and internationally.
