Project Abstract

Electoral violence is a significant issue in Nigerian politics, with various states experiencing varying degrees of violence during elections. Anambra State, in particular, has had its share of electoral violence during the gubernatorial elections of 2003 and 2007. This research project aims to analyze the patterns, causes, and consequences of electoral violence in Anambra State during these two election cycles. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative case studies to provide a comprehensive understanding of electoral violence in Anambra State. Quantitative data will be collected from official election reports, crime statistics, and other relevant sources to identify the trends and patterns of violence during the 2003 and 2007 gubernatorial elections. This data will be analyzed using statistical methods to determine the extent of violence, its distribution across the state, and any correlations with electoral outcomes. Qualitative data will be gathered through interviews with key stakeholders, including election officials, politicians, civil society organizations, and community leaders. These interviews will provide insights into the causes of electoral violence in Anambra State, including factors such as political competition, ethno-religious tensions, and the role of state and non-state actors in instigating violence. The research will also investigate the consequences of electoral violence on the political landscape of Anambra State, including its impact on voter turnout, political participation, and democratic governance. By combining quantitative and qualitative data, this research project aims to contribute to the existing literature on electoral violence in Nigeria and provide valuable insights for policymakers, election officials, and civil society organizations. The findings of this study will help to identify strategies for preventing and mitigating electoral violence in Anambra State and other regions facing similar challenges. Ultimately, the research aims to promote free, fair, and peaceful elections in Nigeria, contributing to the consolidation of democracy and good governance in the country. In conclusion, electoral violence in Anambra State during the 2003 and 2007 gubernatorial elections is a complex phenomenon that requires a multifaceted approach for analysis and intervention. This research project seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of electoral violence in Anambra State and offer recommendations for addressing this issue to ensure peaceful and democratic elections in the future.
