Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the rich linguistic diversity and intricate language dynamics within multilingual communities, shedding light on the complex interplay of different languages, dialects, and communication patterns. In an increasingly globalized world, understanding the nuances of multilingualism has become crucial, as it not only reflects the cultural and social fabric of communities but also shapes individual and collective identities, educational outcomes, and cross-cultural interactions. The primary objective of this study is to explore the linguistic landscape of selected multilingual communities, examining the factors that contribute to the maintenance, shift, and evolution of various languages. By delving into the lived experiences of community members, the project will unveil the social, economic, and political forces that influence language use, attitudes, and preferences. Additionally, the study will investigate the role of language policies, educational systems, and community-driven initiatives in shaping the linguistic dynamics within these diverse settings. One of the key aspects of this project is the focus on language contact and the resulting language variation and change. The research will examine the intricate patterns of language mixing, code-switching, and language borrowing, which often characterize multilingual environments. This analysis will shed light on the adaptive strategies employed by speakers to navigate their linguistic repertoires and communicate effectively across language boundaries. Furthermore, the project will explore the impact of multilingualism on individual and community identities.
