Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the significance of code-switching in intercultural communication, exploring its impact on cross-cultural interactions and its potential to facilitate more effective and inclusive dialogues. Code-switching, the practice of alternating between two or more languages or linguistic varieties within a single conversation, is a ubiquitous phenomenon in multilingual societies. However, its role in the context of intercultural communication has not been extensively studied, despite its potential to provide valuable insights into the dynamics of cross-cultural exchange. Effective intercultural communication is crucial in our increasingly globalized world, where individuals from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds interact regularly. However, such interactions can often be fraught with misunderstandings, biases, and power imbalances, which can hinder mutual understanding and collaboration. By exploring the role of code-switching in this context, this project aims to shed light on the ways in which individuals navigate these challenges and leverage linguistic flexibility to bridge cultural divides.
