Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the profound influence of social media on the evolution of language, a phenomenon that has garnered increasing attention in the digital age. As language is the foundation of human communication and expression, understanding the ways in which social media platforms shape and transform linguistic patterns is essential for comprehending the broader societal and cultural implications of this technological revolution. The rapid growth and widespread adoption of social media have created a unique linguistic landscape, fostering the emergence of new vocabulary, grammatical structures, and communication styles. These digital platforms have not only facilitated the instantaneous exchange of information but have also enabled the rapid dissemination of linguistic innovations, often transcending geographical and cultural boundaries. This project will delve into the mechanisms by which social media, with its inherent characteristics of immediacy, informality, and user-generated content, catalyzes the evolution of language. One of the primary focuses of this study will be the analysis of lexical and semantic changes, such as the introduction of neologisms, the evolution of existing words, and the emergence of digital-specific terminology. The project will investigate how social media users, driven by the need for expressive and concise communication, invent new words, repurpose existing ones, and create novel linguistic forms to convey their ideas and emotions effectively within the constraints of digital platforms. Furthermore, the project will examine the impact of social media on the evolution of grammatical structures and communication styles. The study will explore how the informality, brevity, and interactive nature of social media interactions shape the way users construct sentences, utilize punctuation, and engage in discourse, potentially leading to the normalization of non-standard linguistic patterns.
