Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the role of cooperative economics and management in fostering sustainable development through the implementation of collaborative business models. Cooperatives, as a distinct form of enterprise, have demonstrated their potential to address economic, social, and environmental challenges by promoting equitable wealth distribution, democratic decision-making, and community-driven development. In an era marked by growing concerns over climate change, income inequality, and the need for more sustainable business practices, the study of cooperative economics and management offers a promising pathway towards a more inclusive and resilient economic system. By examining the principles and practices of cooperative businesses, this project seeks to uncover the mechanisms through which they can contribute to sustainable development, both at the local and global levels. The project will employ a multi-disciplinary approach, drawing insights from the fields of economics, management, and sustainability science. Through a combination of literature reviews, case studies, and empirical analyses, the research team will investigate the unique characteristics of cooperative enterprises, their governance structures, and their ability to foster innovation, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding the various collaborative business models adopted by cooperatives, such as worker-owned enterprises, consumer cooperatives, and multi-stakeholder initiatives. The project will analyze how these models enable cooperative businesses to effectively address sustainability challenges, from renewable energy production to sustainable agriculture and circular economy practices. Furthermore, the research will explore the policy and regulatory environments that either enable or hinder the growth and development of cooperative enterprises. By identifying best practices and innovative policy approaches, the project aims to provide policymakers and practitioners with evidence-based recommendations to support the scaling up of cooperative business models as a means of achieving sustainable development goals. The findings of this project will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the role of alternative economic models in sustainable development.
