Project Abstract

This project aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the phytochemical composition and biological activities of native medicinal plants. The study is particularly significant in the context of the growing interest in natural and herbal remedies, as well as the need to explore alternative sources of bioactive compounds for potential therapeutic applications. Medicinal plants have long been a rich source of traditional medicine, providing remedies for various ailments across different cultures and regions. However, many of these plants remain underexplored, with their phytochemical profiles and pharmacological properties yet to be fully characterized. This project seeks to address this gap by focusing on the analysis of native medicinal plants that are indigenous to the local region. The primary objectives of this project are to (1) identify and isolate the key phytochemical constituents present in the selected medicinal plants, (2) evaluate the biological activities of these phytochemicals, including their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cytotoxic properties, and (3) establish the potential therapeutic applications of the identified bioactive compounds. The project will employ a multi-pronged approach, combining advanced analytical techniques and in vitro assays to achieve these objectives. The initial phase will involve the collection and identification of the target medicinal plant species, followed by the extraction and fractionation of the plant materials to obtain various solvent extracts and purified compounds. The phytochemical analysis will be conducted using state-of-the-art analytical tools, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).
