Project Abstract

Abstract
Water scarcity is a growing concern in the state of California, leading to increased interest in alternative water sources such as recycled (reclaimed) water. While recycled water has the potential to alleviate water shortages, there are concerns about its impact on native plant species in California. This research project aims to determine whether recycled water would harm California native plant species by conducting a series of experiments in a controlled environment. The study will focus on several key native plant species commonly found in California, including chaparral plants, coastal sage scrub plants, and desert plants. These plant species were chosen based on their ecological importance and widespread distribution across the state. The experiments will involve irrigating the plants with varying concentrations of recycled water to simulate different scenarios of water use. To assess the impact of recycled water on the native plant species, several parameters will be measured, including plant growth, leaf morphology, physiological responses, and overall health. Additionally, soil samples will be collected and analyzed to determine any potential changes in soil quality due to the use of recycled water for irrigation. The research will also investigate the potential accumulation of salts and other contaminants present in recycled water in the plant tissues and soil. This will help in understanding the long-term effects of using recycled water on native plant species and ecosystem health. Overall, this project seeks to provide valuable insights into the potential risks associated with using recycled water for irrigation in California and its impact on native plant species. The findings from this research will contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding water conservation and sustainable water management practices in the state. By evaluating the effects of recycled water on California native plant species, this research can inform decision-makers, policymakers, and land managers about the potential benefits and risks of utilizing recycled water for irrigation purposes. Ultimately, the goal is to promote the conservation of native plant species while addressing the water scarcity challenges facing California.
