Abstract
Urban revitalization through adaptive reuse of historic buildings in downtown areas is a critical strategy for preserving architectural heritage, fostering sustainable development, and revitalizing urban centers. This research project aims to investigate the challenges, opportunities, and impacts of adaptive reuse in transforming historic buildings into vibrant, functional spaces that meet the needs of contemporary society. By focusing on downtown areas, where historic structures often face neglect and decay, this study seeks to explore how adaptive reuse can contribute to the revitalization of urban cores, promote economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. The research begins with a comprehensive introduction that sets the context for the study, providing background information on the significance of historic buildings in urban areas and the challenges they face. The problem statement identifies the key issues surrounding the preservation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings, highlighting the importance of finding sustainable solutions to ensure their long-term viability. The objectives of the study are outlined to guide the research process, while the limitations and scope of the study are also defined to provide clarity on the research boundaries. A detailed literature review in Chapter Two examines existing studies, theories, and best practices related to adaptive reuse of historic buildings and urban revitalization. This section explores ten key themes, including the cultural significance of historic buildings, economic benefits of adaptive reuse, sustainability considerations, community engagement, and policy frameworks that support heritage conservation and urban regeneration. Chapter Three delves into the research methodology, outlining the approach, research design, data collection methods, and analysis techniques employed in the study. This section includes eight key components, such as case studies, surveys, interviews with stakeholders, and site observations, to gather qualitative and quantitative data on the challenges and opportunities of adaptive reuse in downtown areas. The discussion of findings in Chapter Four synthesizes the research results, presenting a detailed analysis of the impacts of adaptive reuse on historic buildings, urban revitalization, and community development.
