Abstract
The adaptive reuse of industrial buildings has emerged as a critical strategy in achieving sustainable urban development by repurposing existing structures to meet modern needs while preserving historical and architectural value. This research delves into the significance of adaptive reuse in urban contexts, exploring its potential to address challenges related to urbanization, sustainability, and cultural heritage preservation. The study adopts a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on principles from architecture, urban planning, sustainability, and heritage conservation to analyze the opportunities and constraints associated with repurposing industrial buildings. The research begins with a comprehensive review of literature on adaptive reuse, sustainable urban development, and heritage conservation to provide a theoretical framework for the study. Building on this foundation, the methodology section outlines the research approach, data collection methods, and analytical tools employed to investigate case studies of adaptive reuse projects in different urban settings. Through a qualitative analysis of these case studies, the research identifies key factors influencing the success of adaptive reuse initiatives, including regulatory frameworks, stakeholder engagement, financial considerations, and design strategies. The findings from the case studies are presented and discussed in Chapter Four, highlighting best practices, challenges, and lessons learned from successful adaptive reuse projects. The analysis reveals that adaptive reuse offers significant benefits in terms of sustainability, economic revitalization, community engagement, and cultural preservation. However, it also underscores the complexities and trade-offs involved in repurposing industrial buildings, such as balancing historical authenticity with contemporary functionality and addressing issues of accessibility and inclusivity. In conclusion, the research emphasizes the importance of integrating adaptive reuse strategies into urban planning and development policies to promote sustainable and resilient cities. By leveraging the untapped potential of industrial buildings, cities can revitalize urban neighborhoods, reduce environmental impact, and celebrate their industrial heritage.
