The design and development of affordable housing for low-income communities represent a critical challenge in contemporary urban planning and architecture. This research project explores the application of sustainable design principles to address the housing needs of marginalized populations, focusing on enhancing environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The study investigates the potential benefits and challenges of integrating sustainable design strategies into affordable housing projects, aiming to create more resilient and livable communities for individuals with limited resources. The research begins with an in-depth exploration of the background of the study, highlighting the increasing demand for affordable housing and the urgent need to adopt sustainable practices in the built environment. The problem statement identifies the key issues facing low-income communities in accessing adequate and affordable housing, emphasizing the importance of innovative solutions to address these challenges. The objectives of the study are to examine the effectiveness of sustainable design principles in improving the quality, affordability, and sustainability of housing for marginalized populations. Through a comprehensive literature review, the research evaluates existing studies and projects that have implemented sustainable design approaches in affordable housing developments. The review identifies ten critical themes related to sustainable design principles, affordability, community engagement, energy efficiency, material selection, and social equity, among others.
