Project Abstract

This project aims to address the critical challenge of balancing the preservation of archaeological sites with the increasing demand for tourism and public access. As the world's cultural heritage sites face growing pressures from visitor influx, climate change, and various other factors, it is imperative to develop innovative strategies that can ensure the long-term protection and sustainable management of these invaluable resources. The project recognizes the significant role that archaeology plays in our understanding of human history and the importance of preserving archaeological sites for future generations. At the same time, it acknowledges the economic and educational benefits that tourism can bring to local communities situated near these sites. The overarching goal of this initiative is to create a framework that harmonizes the needs of archaeological preservation with the opportunities presented by responsible tourism development. The project will commence with a comprehensive assessment of the current state of archaeological site management and tourism practices in selected regions. This will involve in-depth case studies, stakeholder consultations, and the analysis of best practices from around the world. The research will examine the challenges and constraints faced by site managers, local authorities, and tourism operators, as well as the impact of various interventions and policies on the preservation and interpretation of archaeological resources. Drawing on this empirical foundation, the project will then develop a set of integrated, sustainable practices for archaeological site management and interpretation. These practices will be designed to enhance visitor experiences while minimizing the negative impacts on the sites. Key elements of the proposed approach include the implementation of visitor management strategies, the integration of digital technologies for site interpretation, the promotion of community-based tourism initiatives, and the strengthening of stakeholder collaboration and capacity building. The project will also explore the potential for leveraging archaeological tourism as a tool for sustainable development.
