Project Abstract

This project aims to develop an innovative and eco-friendly wastewater treatment solution using biochar-based filtration systems. Wastewater management is a pressing global challenge, as the increasing volume of wastewater generated by industrial, agricultural, and domestic activities poses significant environmental and public health concerns. Traditional wastewater treatment methods often rely on energy-intensive and chemically-intensive processes, which can have a detrimental impact on the environment. The use of biochar-based filtration systems offers a promising alternative that addresses these limitations. Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced through the pyrolysis of organic matter, has gained widespread attention for its diverse applications in environmental remediation. This project leverages the unique properties of biochar, such as its high surface area, adsorption capacity, and ability to support microbial growth, to develop an efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment system. The biochar-based filtration system will be designed to remove a wide range of contaminants, including organic matter, heavy metals, and pathogens, from wastewater streams. The primary objectives of this project are to 1. Investigate the effectiveness of biochar-based filtration systems in removing various pollutants from wastewater. 2. Optimize the design and operational parameters of the biochar-based filtration system to maximize treatment efficiency and performance. 3. Assess the environmental and economic benefits of implementing biochar-based wastewater treatment in comparison to conventional methods. 4. Develop a scalable and adaptable solution that can be readily implemented in diverse wastewater treatment applications, ranging from small-scale community systems to large-scale industrial facilities. The project will involve a multidisciplinary approach, combining expertise from environmental engineering, materials science, and microbiology. The research will be conducted in several phases, starting with the characterization of biochar materials and their adsorption properties. This will be followed by the design and construction of laboratory-scale biochar-based filtration systems, where the treatment performance will be evaluated using synthetic and real-world wastewater samples. Optimization studies will be conducted to determine the optimal biochar characteristics, filtration system configurations, and operating conditions. The project will also assess the potential synergies between biochar-based filtration and other wastewater treatment technologies, such as biological processes or membrane filtration, to enhance the overall treatment efficiency and develop a comprehensive solution. The environmental and economic impacts of the biochar-based system will be evaluated through life cycle assessment and cost-benefit analysis, ensuring the long-term sustainability and scalability of the technology. The successful implementation of this project will contribute to the development of a more sustainable and efficient wastewater treatment approach, with the potential to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of wastewater management. By leveraging the unique properties of biochar, this project aims to provide a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to conventional wastewater treatment methods, ultimately promoting the transition towards a circular economy and a more sustainable future.
