Abstract
Climate change poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity, particularly impacting smallholder farmers in developing countries. This research examines the specific effects of climate change on agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in a developing country context. Through a case study approach, data was collected from smallholder farmers to assess the challenges they face due to climate change and the strategies they employ to mitigate its effects. The study found that smallholder farmers are experiencing adverse impacts of climate change, including changes in rainfall patterns, increased frequency of extreme weather events, and shifts in temperature regimes. These changes have resulted in reduced crop yields, decreased livestock productivity, and increased vulnerability to food insecurity. The research also revealed that smallholder farmers are adopting various adaptation strategies such as changing planting dates, diversifying crops, and investing in water management systems to cope with the effects of climate change. Moreover, the study identified several barriers that hinder smallholder farmers from effectively adapting to climate change, including limited access to financial resources, lack of technical knowledge, and inadequate infrastructure. It also highlighted the role of government policies and support programs in promoting climate-resilient agriculture among smallholder farmers. In conclusion, the findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers to climate change. Policy recommendations include improving access to climate-smart technologies, providing financial support for adaptation measures, and strengthening extension services to build the capacity of smallholder farmers. By addressing these challenges, smallholder farmers in developing countries can better cope with the impacts of climate change and sustainably enhance agricultural productivity for food security and livelihood sustainability.
