Abstract
Climate change poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity and food security globally, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria where agriculture is a crucial sector for economic growth and food provision. This research investigates the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and food security, focusing on smallholder farmers in Nigeria. The study employs a mixed-method approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive analysis of the issue. The research begins with an exploration of the current state of climate change and its implications for agriculture, highlighting the specific challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Nigeria. By examining the historical trends of temperature and rainfall patterns in the region, the study aims to establish the link between climate change and its impact on agricultural productivity. Additionally, the research investigates the adaptation strategies employed by smallholder farmers to mitigate the effects of climate change on their farming activities. Through a series of surveys and interviews with smallholder farmers, the study assesses the perceived impact of climate change on crop yields, livestock production, and overall food security in the study area. The research also examines the role of government policies and interventions in supporting smallholder farmers in adapting to climate change and enhancing their resilience to its effects. The findings of the study reveal that climate change has indeed had a detrimental impact on agricultural productivity and food security among smallholder farmers in Nigeria. Changes in temperature and rainfall patterns have led to crop failures, reduced livestock productivity, and increased food insecurity in the region. Despite these challenges, the study identifies several adaptation strategies adopted by smallholder farmers, including changes in cropping patterns, water management practices, and the use of drought-resistant crop varieties. The research underscores the importance of government support and interventions in promoting climate-smart agriculture practices among smallholder farmers. Policy recommendations are made to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers to climate change, including the provision of climate information services, access to credit facilities for agricultural investments, and the promotion of sustainable farming practices. In conclusion, this research contributes to the understanding of the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and food security among smallholder farmers in Nigeria. By highlighting the challenges faced by farmers and identifying potential adaptation strategies, the study provides valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners working in the field of agric economics and climate change adaptation.
