Abstract
Climate change poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity, particularly for smallholder farmers who heavily rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. This research study investigates the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in a specific region. Through a case study approach, data was collected from smallholder farmers in the selected region to analyze the challenges they face due to changing climatic conditions. The study aims to identify the specific effects of climate change on agricultural productivity, understand the adaptive strategies employed by smallholder farmers, and assess the overall implications for food security and rural livelihoods. The research findings reveal that smallholder farmers in the selected region are experiencing adverse effects of climate change on their agricultural activities. These effects include erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, increased pest and disease incidence, and reduced crop yields. Smallholder farmers are implementing various adaptation strategies such as changing cropping patterns, utilizing drought-resistant crop varieties, and improving water management practices. However, these strategies are often limited by factors such as access to resources, knowledge, and institutional support. The implications of climate change on agricultural productivity extend beyond the farm level to impact food security and rural livelihoods in the region. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions and policies to support smallholder farmers in adapting to climate change and building resilience in the face of environmental challenges. Strengthening agricultural extension services, providing access to climate-smart technologies, and enhancing market linkages are identified as crucial steps towards sustainable agricultural development in the context of climate change. In conclusion, this research study underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts from government, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders to address the challenges posed by climate change on agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers. By understanding the specific impacts of climate change and promoting adaptive strategies, it is possible to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers and ensure food security in the face of a changing climate. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge on climate change adaptation in agriculture and provides valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers working in the field of agricultural economics and sustainable development.
