Project Abstract

Sustainable Agricultural Practices and Their Impact on Smallholder Farmer Livelihoods This project aims to investigate the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and their impact on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in developing regions. Smallholder farmers, who often operate on small landholdings and rely on traditional farming methods, face numerous challenges in the face of climate change, environmental degradation, and economic pressures. Adopting sustainable agricultural practices has the potential to address these challenges and improve the resilience and well-being of these vulnerable communities. The project will focus on three primary objectives 1) Identifying the key sustainable agricultural practices that can enhance the productivity, profitability, and environmental sustainability of smallholder farming systems; 2) Assessing the barriers and enablers to the adoption of these practices among smallholder farmers; and 3) Evaluating the impact of sustainable agricultural practices on the livelihoods, food security, and overall well-being of smallholder farming households. To achieve these objectives, the project will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. This will include conducting surveys, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews with smallholder farmers, as well as engaging with local agricultural extension services, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders. The project will also utilize remote sensing and GIS data to analyze the environmental and agricultural dynamics of the study regions. The findings from this project will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on sustainable agriculture and its potential to address the challenges faced by smallholder farmers. The research will provide valuable insights into the specific barriers and enablers to the adoption of sustainable practices, as well as the multidimensional impacts on farmer livelihoods, including changes in productivity, income, food security, and overall well-being. Furthermore, the project will engage with policymakers, development agencies, and civil society organizations to disseminate the research findings and advocate for the integration of sustainable agricultural practices into local and national development strategies. By working closely with these stakeholders, the project aims to inform and influence policy decisions, resource allocation, and program design to better support smallholder farmers in their transition towards more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. The project's ultimate goal is to contribute to the broader global efforts to achieve food security, environmental sustainability, and poverty alleviation, particularly among the most vulnerable and marginalized communities. By empowering smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices, the project seeks to enhance their resilience, improve their livelihoods, and ultimately, foster more equitable and sustainable food systems.
