Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The emergence of antimicrobial resistance poses a significant threat to global public health, highlighting the urgent need for alternative antimicrobial agents. Essential oils have gained attention for their potential antimicrobial properties, offering a natural and potentially effective solution. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial properties of essential oils against common human pathogens. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, outlining the background of the study, the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of terms. Essential oils have been used for centuries in traditional medicine and aromatherapy, with increasing scientific interest in their antimicrobial potential. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review, examining existing studies on the antimicrobial properties of essential oils. Key topics include the chemical composition of essential oils, mechanisms of antimicrobial action, synergistic effects with antibiotics, and potential applications in healthcare settings. Chapter Three details the research methodology employed in this study. It includes the selection of essential oils, preparation of microbial cultures, determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), evaluation of antimicrobial activity through disc diffusion assays, and statistical analysis of results. The methodology was designed to provide reliable and reproducible data on the antimicrobial effects of essential oils. Chapter Four presents the discussion of findings based on the results obtained from the experiments. The antimicrobial activity of selected essential oils against common human pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, is analyzed and compared. Factors influencing the effectiveness of essential oils, such as chemical composition, concentration, and microbial susceptibility, are discussed in detail. Chapter Five concludes the thesis by summarizing the key findings, implications for future research, and practical applications of the study results. The antimicrobial properties of essential oils show promising potential as alternative antimicrobial agents against common human pathogens. Further research is needed to explore the clinical use of essential oils and their integration into healthcare practices. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the understanding of essential oils as natural antimicrobial agents and their potential role in combating antimicrobial resistance. The findings highlight the importance of exploring alternative treatment options to address the growing threat of resistant pathogens. Implementing essential oils as part of antimicrobial strategies may offer safer and more sustainable solutions for infectious diseases.
