Abstract
The rise of multi-drug resistant bacteria poses a significant challenge to public health worldwide, necessitating the exploration of alternative antimicrobial strategies. This thesis investigates the antibacterial properties of herbal extracts as potential agents against multi-drug resistant bacteria. The research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of selected herbal extracts in inhibiting the growth of multi-drug resistant bacterial strains and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. The literature review in Chapter Two critically analyzes existing research on herbal extracts and their antibacterial properties, highlighting gaps in knowledge and setting the foundation for the current study. Chapter Three details the research methodology, including the selection and preparation of herbal extracts, bacterial strains used, experimental procedures, and data analysis techniques. This chapter outlines the experimental design, controls, and validation methods employed to ensure the reliability and reproducibility of the results. Chapter Four presents a comprehensive discussion of the findings, including the antimicrobial activity of herbal extracts against multi-drug resistant bacteria, minimum inhibitory concentrations, synergistic effects with conventional antibiotics, and potential mechanisms of action. The results are interpreted in the context of existing literature and their implications for the development of novel antimicrobial therapies are discussed. In Chapter Five, the conclusion summarizes the key findings of the study, emphasizing the potential of herbal extracts as alternative antimicrobial agents against multi-drug resistant bacteria. The implications of the research findings for public health, drug development, and future research directions are discussed. Overall, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on herbal medicine and its potential applications in combating antimicrobial resistance.
