Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Periodontal diseases are prevalent oral health conditions that affect a significant portion of the global population. Traditional treatment methods for periodontal diseases, such as scaling and root planing, have limitations in effectively eliminating bacteria and promoting tissue regeneration. Laser therapy has emerged as a promising alternative treatment modality in dentistry due to its antimicrobial properties, minimal invasiveness, and potential for tissue regeneration. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of laser therapy in the treatment of periodontal diseases. The research was conducted through a comprehensive literature review, which examined existing studies on the use of laser therapy in periodontal treatment. The literature review highlighted the mechanisms of action of lasers in periodontal therapy, including bacterial reduction, biofilm disruption, and stimulation of tissue healing. Additionally, the review explored different types of lasers commonly used in periodontal treatment, such as diode lasers, erbium lasers, and carbon dioxide lasers. In the research methodology, a randomized controlled trial was designed to compare the clinical outcomes of laser therapy versus traditional scaling and root planing in patients with periodontal diseases. Key parameters, including pocket depth reduction, clinical attachment level gain, and bleeding on probing, were assessed pre- and post-treatment to evaluate the efficacy of laser therapy. The findings of the study revealed that laser therapy demonstrated significant improvements in periodontal parameters compared to traditional treatment methods. Patients treated with laser therapy exhibited greater reductions in pocket depth, gains in clinical attachment level, and reduced bleeding on probing. Moreover, laser therapy was found to be well-tolerated by patients, with minimal postoperative discomfort and faster recovery times. The discussion of findings delved into the potential mechanisms behind the superior outcomes observed with laser therapy, such as its ability to target periodontal pathogens effectively and promote tissue regeneration. The limitations of the study, including sample size constraints and variations in laser parameters, were also addressed. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of laser therapy in the treatment of periodontal diseases. The results suggest that laser therapy holds promise as a beneficial adjunct or alternative to traditional periodontal treatments, offering improved clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Further research is warranted to explore optimal laser parameters, treatment protocols, and long-term effects of laser therapy in periodontal care.
