Abstract
The research project aimed to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. The study involved a sample of 500 adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Data was collected through surveys and interviews focusing on social media usage patterns, mental health indicators, and perceptions of self-esteem and body image. The findings revealed a significant correlation between social media use and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Adolescents who reported spending more time on social media platforms showed higher levels of psychological distress compared to those who used social media moderately. Furthermore, the study highlighted the role of cyberbullying and negative body image perceptions perpetuated by social media in contributing to mental health challenges among adolescents. Recommendations were made for parents, educators, and mental health professionals to promote digital literacy, open communication, and positive self-image development to mitigate the adverse effects of social media on adolescent mental health.
