Abstract
This research project focuses on investigating the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. With the increasing prevalence of social media use among teenagers, concerns have been raised regarding its potential negative effects on mental well-being. The study aims to explore the relationship between social media usage patterns and mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. A mixed-methods approach will be employed to gather data from a sample of adolescents aged 13-18 years. Quantitative data will be collected through surveys to assess social media usage habits and mental health indicators. Qualitative data will be obtained through interviews to provide in-depth insights into the subjective experiences and perceptions of participants regarding social media and its effects on their mental health. The research will examine various factors that may influence the relationship between social media use and mental health, such as the type of social media platforms used, the frequency and duration of usage, and the content consumed. Additionally, the study will explore potential mediating factors, such as social comparison, cyberbullying, and fear of missing out, that may exacerbate the negative impact of social media on mental health. By investigating the complex interplay between social media and mental health, this research aims to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the relationship and inform the development of targeted interventions and strategies to promote positive mental well-being among adolescents in the digital age. The findings of this study are expected to shed light on the potential risks associated with excessive or harmful social media use and highlight the importance of promoting healthy online behaviors and digital literacy skills among young people. Overall, this research project seeks to address a significant gap in the existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the impact of social media on adolescent mental health and offering practical insights for parents, educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers to support young people in navigating the challenges of social media use while safeguarding their mental well-being.
