Abstract
Body-worn cameras (BWCs) have emerged as a technological tool to enhance accountability and transparency in policing practices, particularly in urban areas where police-community relations are often strained. This thesis investigates the impact of BWCs on police-community relations from a criminological perspective. The study explores how the adoption of BWCs influences perceptions of trust, legitimacy, and accountability among both police officers and community members. A mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, was utilized to gather data from police officers, community members, and stakeholders in urban areas where BWCs have been implemented. The findings reveal that the use of BWCs has the potential to enhance trust and transparency in police-community interactions. Police officers reported feeling more accountable for their actions when wearing BWCs, leading to improved behavior and professionalism. Community members expressed increased confidence in law enforcement and perceived a reduction in instances of misconduct. However, challenges such as privacy concerns, data management, and the potential for surveillance misuse were also identified. The study highlights the importance of clear policies and guidelines governing the use of BWCs to address these challenges and maximize the benefits of the technology. Recommendations are provided for law enforcement agencies, policymakers, and community organizations to promote the effective implementation of BWC programs and improve police-community relations in urban areas. Overall, this research contributes to the existing literature on police accountability and technology in policing by providing insights into the complex dynamics of BWCs on police-community relations. The findings have implications for criminological theory, policy development, and practical strategies to enhance trust and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve in urban settings.
