Body-worn cameras have become increasingly prevalent in law enforcement agencies as a tool to enhance transparency and accountability in police-citizen interactions. This thesis examines the impact of body-worn cameras on police-citizen interactions from a criminological perspective. The study aims to investigate how the use of body-worn cameras influences the behavior of both police officers and citizens during interactions, as well as its implications for trust, accountability, and perceptions of safety. The research methodology employed in this study includes a comprehensive literature review, qualitative interviews with police officers and citizens, and quantitative analysis of existing data on police-citizen interactions in jurisdictions where body-worn cameras are in use. The findings of this research provide insights into the effectiveness of body-worn cameras in improving the quality of police-citizen interactions and reducing incidents of misconduct and excessive use of force. Key themes explored in this thesis include the role of body-worn cameras in enhancing transparency and accountability, the impact of cameras on the behavior of both police officers and citizens, the potential for cameras to improve trust and perceptions of safety, and the challenges and limitations associated with their use. By examining these factors through a criminological lens, this study contributes to our understanding of the complex dynamics at play in police-citizen interactions in the digital age. The results of this research have significant implications for policy and practice in law enforcement, as they highlight the potential of body-worn cameras to improve the quality of interactions between police officers and citizens. Thesis Overview

The project titled "The Impact of Body-Worn Cameras on Police-Citizen Interactions: A Criminological Analysis" aims to investigate the effects of body-worn cameras (BWCs) on interactions between police officers and citizens from a criminological perspective. The study seeks to explore how the presence of BWCs influences police behavior, citizen behavior, and the overall dynamics of police-citizen interactions. The research will involve a comprehensive review of existing literature on the topic, examining studies that have explored the impact of BWCs on various aspects of policing and citizen interactions. The literature review will cover key themes such as the effectiveness of BWCs in reducing the use of force by police officers, improving civilian complaints against officers, enhancing evidence collection and documentation, and influencing the perceptions of both police officers and citizens regarding accountability and trust. In addition to the literature review, the research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative analysis will involve the collection and analysis of statistical data related to the use of BWCs in police departments, including measures such as the number of complaints filed against officers, incidents of use of force, and changes in crime rates following the implementation of BWC programs. Qualitative analysis will involve interviews or surveys with police officers, citizens, and community stakeholders to gather insights into their perceptions and experiences with BWCs. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the impact of BWCs on police-citizen interactions and provide valuable insights for policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and researchers.
