Abstract
Body-worn cameras (BWCs) have become increasingly prevalent in law enforcement agencies worldwide as a tool to enhance police accountability and strengthen public trust. This thesis explores the impact of BWCs on police accountability and public trust from a criminological perspective. The study delves into the effectiveness of BWCs in improving police behavior, enhancing transparency, and reducing misconduct incidents. Through a comprehensive literature review, the research examines existing studies on BWC implementation, policy implications, and the perceptions of both law enforcement officers and the general public. The research methodology employed in this study includes a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative data analysis and qualitative interviews with law enforcement professionals and community members. The data collection process involves surveys, focus groups, and observational studies to gather insights on the actual use of BWCs in various policing scenarios. By analyzing the collected data, the study aims to identify the strengths and limitations of BWCs in promoting police accountability and rebuilding public trust in law enforcement. Findings from the study reveal both positive and negative outcomes associated with BWC deployment in policing practices. While BWCs have been shown to increase officer compliance with policies and procedures, reduce citizen complaints, and provide valuable evidence in criminal investigations, challenges such as privacy concerns, data management issues, and officer discretion in camera activation persist. The discussion of findings delves into the complexities of incorporating BWCs into police operations and highlights the need for clear guidelines, training programs, and community engagement strategies to maximize their benefits. In conclusion, this thesis underscores the importance of understanding the nuanced implications of BWCs on police accountability and public trust. By addressing the key findings and recommendations presented in this study, law enforcement agencies can harness the potential of BWC technology to foster greater transparency, legitimacy, and community relations. Future research directions are also proposed to further explore the evolving role of BWCs in modern policing practices and their impact on social perceptions of law enforcement.
