Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis examines the impact of body-worn cameras (BWCs) on police-community relations from a criminological perspective. The use of BWCs by law enforcement agencies has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, with proponents arguing that they enhance transparency, accountability, and trust between police officers and the communities they serve. However, there is a need for a comprehensive analysis of the effects of BWCs on various aspects of police-community relations, including perceptions of legitimacy, trust, accountability, and the overall quality of interactions between law enforcement and community members. The study will begin with a thorough review of the existing literature on BWCs and their impact on police-community relations. This review will examine the key findings from previous research studies, identify gaps in the existing literature, and provide a theoretical framework for understanding the potential mechanisms through which BWCs may influence police-community relations. The research methodology will involve a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews and observations. The study will be conducted in collaboration with a local police department, which has recently implemented BWCs within its force. The quantitative component will involve surveying both police officers and community members to assess their perceptions of BWCs and their impact on police-community relations. The qualitative component will involve in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including police officers, community leaders, and members of the public. The findings of the study will be discussed in chapter four, which will provide an in-depth analysis of the data collected through surveys, interviews, and observations. The discussion will explore the ways in which BWCs influence perceptions of legitimacy, trust, and accountability among both police officers and community members. It will also examine the challenges and limitations of BWCs in improving police-community relations and identify potential strategies for maximizing the benefits of BWCs while minimizing their drawbacks. In conclusion, the study will offer recommendations for policy and practice based on the findings of the research. These recommendations will be aimed at improving the use of BWCs as a tool for enhancing police-community relations and fostering greater trust, transparency, and accountability within law enforcement agencies. Through its comprehensive analysis of the impact of BWCs on police-community relations, this thesis seeks to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the role of technology in shaping the dynamics of policing and community engagement.
