The use of body-worn cameras (BWCs) by law enforcement officers has gained significant attention in recent years as a tool to enhance transparency and accountability in policing practices. This thesis aims to explore the impact of body-worn cameras on police-citizen interactions from a criminological perspective. The study investigates how the presence of BWCs influences the behavior of both police officers and citizens during encounters, as well as the broader implications for trust, accountability, and perceptions of legitimacy within the criminal justice system. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. The literature review in Chapter Two critically examines existing research on the use of body-worn cameras in law enforcement, highlighting key findings, debates, and gaps in the literature. The review covers topics such as the impact of BWCs on police behavior, citizen behavior, perceptions of accountability, and the overall effectiveness of BWC programs.
