Abstract
This thesis explores the impact of body-worn cameras (BWCs) on police-citizen interactions through a comparative analysis. In recent years, the use of BWCs by law enforcement agencies has become increasingly prevalent as a tool for enhancing transparency, accountability, and trust between police officers and the communities they serve. This study aims to investigate how the presence of BWCs influences the behavior of both police officers and citizens during interactions, and whether these devices contribute to positive outcomes in terms of accountability, trust-building, and the reduction of conflict. The research methodology employed in this study includes a comparative analysis of police-citizen interactions in two distinct settings one where BWCs are utilized by officers and another where they are not. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, including surveys, interviews, and observational analysis, this study seeks to identify differences in behavior, perceptions, and outcomes in interactions where BWCs are present compared to those where they are absent. The literature review section of this thesis provides a comprehensive overview of existing research on the use of BWCs in policing, including studies on the impact of these devices on officer behavior, civilian behavior, accountability, transparency, and trust. By synthesizing and analyzing this body of literature, the thesis aims to situate the current study within the broader context of research on BWCs and police-citizen interactions. The findings of this study are expected to shed light on the effectiveness of BWCs in enhancing accountability, transparency, and trust in police-citizen interactions. By comparing the outcomes of interactions in settings with and without BWCs, this study seeks to contribute to the ongoing discourse on the role of technology in modern policing practices and its implications for building positive relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. In conclusion, this thesis presents a timely and relevant analysis of the impact of body-worn cameras on police-citizen interactions, offering insights into the potential benefits and challenges associated with the use of this technology. The findings of this study have implications for policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and community members seeking to improve the quality of police-community relations and enhance trust and accountability in policing practices.
