Abstract
Body-worn cameras (BWCs) have become increasingly prevalent in law enforcement agencies around the world as a tool to enhance transparency and accountability. The deployment of BWCs raises important questions regarding their impact on police officer behavior and public perception. This thesis investigates the effects of BWCs on police officer behavior and public perception in various contexts. Through a comprehensive literature review, this study examines existing research on the use of BWCs in policing and their influence on officer conduct and community relations. The literature review reveals a range of findings related to the impact of BWCs on police officer behavior. Some studies suggest that the presence of BWCs can lead to enhanced accountability and professionalism among officers, while others raise concerns about potential negative effects such as increased stress and self-censorship. Additionally, the review highlights the role of organizational policies and training in shaping the outcomes of BWC implementation. In terms of public perception, research indicates that the use of BWCs can enhance trust and confidence in law enforcement by providing a transparent record of police interactions. However, concerns have been raised about privacy implications and the potential for BWC footage to be misused. This thesis seeks to explore these various dimensions of the impact of BWCs on both police officer behavior and public perception. The research methodology employed in this study includes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of BWC usage data with qualitative interviews and surveys with police officers and community members. By collecting data from multiple stakeholders, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics surrounding the use of BWCs in policing. The findings of this research shed light on the complex interplay between BWCs, police officer behavior, and public perception. The results indicate that the presence of BWCs can have both positive and negative effects on police behavior, depending on factors such as officer attitudes, departmental policies, and community expectations. Similarly, public perceptions of BWCs are influenced by considerations of trust, privacy, and accountability. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the growing body of literature on the impact of BWCs on policing practices and community relations. The findings offer valuable insights for law enforcement agencies seeking to implement or enhance their use of BWCs, as well as for policymakers and researchers interested in understanding the implications of this technology. Ultimately, this research underscores the importance of carefully considering the multifaceted effects of BWCs on police officer behavior and public perception in order to promote accountability and build trust in law enforcement.
