Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Bribery and corruption are pervasive issues in Nigerian society, deeply rooted in social, political, and economic structures. This research delves into the sociology of bribery and corruption in Nigeria, aiming to understand the underlying mechanisms and dynamics that perpetuate these practices. Through a combination of qualitative research methods including interviews, focus groups, and case studies, this study examines the social norms, attitudes, and behaviors that contribute to the widespread acceptance and prevalence of bribery and corruption in various sectors of Nigerian society. The findings reveal that bribery and corruption in Nigeria are not just individual acts of deviance but are embedded within the social fabric and institutional frameworks of the country. Social networks and relationships play a significant role in facilitating corrupt practices, with personal connections often prioritized over merit and legality. The culture of "gift-giving" and reciprocity further normalizes bribery, blurring the lines between what is considered acceptable and corrupt behavior. Moreover, the unequal distribution of resources and opportunities in Nigeria creates a fertile ground for corruption to thrive, as individuals may resort to bribery as a means of gaining access to essential services or advancing their interests. The lack of accountability and transparency in governance exacerbates the problem, enabling corrupt practices to go unchecked and unpunished. This research also highlights the impact of bribery and corruption on Nigerian society, including its detrimental effects on economic development, social cohesion, and trust in public institutions. The erosion of trust in government officials and institutions further perpetuates a cycle of corruption, as individuals may feel compelled to engage in corrupt practices as a form of self-preservation or survival in a corrupt system. In conclusion, addressing bribery and corruption in Nigerian society requires a multifaceted approach that goes beyond punitive measures to address the root causes of these practices. Promoting transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership, as well as fostering a culture of integrity and civic engagement, are essential steps towards combating bribery and corruption in Nigeria. By understanding the sociological dimensions of corruption, policymakers and stakeholders can develop more effective strategies to curb these practices and promote a more just and equitable society for all Nigerians.
