Abstract
The issue of awaiting trial persons (ATPs) in Nigeria has been a longstanding challenge within the criminal justice system. The Federal Ministry of Justice plays a crucial role in addressing this problem by overseeing the administration of justice in the country. This research project aims to assess the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Justice in tackling the issue of ATPs and to propose recommendations for improvement. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data will be gathered through the analysis of statistical reports and official data on ATPs in Nigeria, while qualitative data will be obtained through interviews with key stakeholders such as officials from the Federal Ministry of Justice, judges, lawyers, and prison officials. The research findings indicate that the Federal Ministry of Justice has implemented various initiatives to address the issue of ATPs, including the establishment of special courts for speedy trials, the provision of legal aid services, and the promotion of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. However, despite these efforts, the problem of ATPs persists due to systemic challenges such as case backlog, inadequate funding, and limited capacity within the justice system. Based on the research findings, several recommendations are proposed to enhance the effectiveness of the Federal Ministry of Justice in addressing the issue of ATPs. These recommendations include the need for increased funding for the justice sector, the implementation of technology-driven solutions to expedite case processing, and the strengthening of collaboration between the Ministry of Justice and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system. In conclusion, the research underscores the importance of the Federal Ministry of Justice in addressing the problem of ATPs in Nigeria. By implementing the proposed recommendations, the Ministry can play a more proactive role in ensuring speedy trials, upholding the rights of ATPs, and promoting a more efficient and fair criminal justice system in the country.
