Abstract
Figures and falsehood syndrome in Nigerian society is a pervasive issue that has significant implications for governance, public perception, and policy-making. This research project delves into the prevalence of misleading statistics, fabricated data, and misinformation in various aspects of Nigerian society, ranging from economic indicators to social welfare programs. By examining the root causes, consequences, and potential remedies for the figures and falsehood syndrome, this study aims to shed light on the challenges facing data integrity in Nigeria. The research explores how misleading figures are generated and perpetuated by different stakeholders, including government agencies, media organizations, and private entities. It investigates the motivations behind the manipulation of data, such as political expediency, financial gain, or social influence. Through a comprehensive analysis of case studies and empirical evidence, the study reveals the damaging effects of false statistics on public trust, policy formulation, and development outcomes. Furthermore, the research examines the role of technology and digital media in amplifying the spread of misinformation and distorted figures. It highlights the rapid dissemination of inaccurate data through social networks, online platforms, and mobile applications, which contribute to the erosion of factual information in Nigerian society. By exploring the mechanisms through which false figures are created and disseminated in the digital age, the study provides insights into the challenges of combating misinformation in the modern information landscape. In addition, the project investigates the impact of the figures and falsehood syndrome on governance and public accountability in Nigeria. It discusses how misleading statistics can distort public perceptions of government performance, impede transparency and accountability mechanisms, and undermine democratic processes. Through a critical examination of the consequences of data manipulation on public trust and civic engagement, the research offers recommendations for strengthening data integrity and promoting evidence-based decision-making in Nigerian society. Overall, this research project contributes to the existing literature on the figures and falsehood syndrome in Nigerian society by offering a systematic analysis of the causes, effects, and implications of misleading statistics. By raising awareness of the challenges posed by data manipulation and misinformation, the study seeks to promote a culture of data integrity, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria's public discourse and policy-making processes.
