Abstract
Torture and the police cell system in Nigeria have long been known to infringe upon the principles of justice in the criminal investigation process. This research project delves into the various ways in which torture is used by law enforcement agencies in Nigeria to extract information from suspects, often leading to false confessions and miscarriages of justice. The police cell system, characterized by overcrowding, poor living conditions, and lack of due process, further compounds the violations of human rights and the rule of law. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, case studies, and interviews with legal experts and human rights advocates, this research sheds light on the systemic issues within the criminal investigation process in Nigeria. The findings reveal that torture is not only used as a means to extract information but also as a tool for intimidation and coercion, undermining the integrity of the justice system. Moreover, the deplorable conditions in police cells contribute to the violation of suspects' rights, with many individuals languishing in detention for extended periods without access to legal representation or a fair trial. The research project also explores the impact of torture and the police cell system on the mental and physical well-being of suspects, highlighting the long-lasting trauma and psychological effects experienced by individuals subjected to such inhumane treatment. By examining the legal framework and international human rights standards, this research underscores the urgent need for reform within the Nigerian criminal justice system to prevent further violations and ensure accountability for perpetrators. Furthermore, the research project proposes recommendations for policy reform, including the implementation of safeguards against torture, improvements in detention conditions, and the promotion of alternative investigation methods that uphold the rights of suspects. By advocating for the protection of human rights and the rule of law, this research aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on criminal justice reform in Nigeria and promote a more just and equitable system for all individuals involved in the criminal investigation process.
