Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Imperial policing in colonial Nigeria played a significant role in shaping the socio-political landscape of the region. This study explores the emergence and evolution of the police force in colonial Nigeria and investigates its role in maintaining imperial control and enforcing colonial policies. Drawing on historical records, official reports, and scholarly works, this research examines the establishment of the Nigerian police force by the British colonial administration and its transformation from a colonial instrument of control to a post-independence institution. The study reveals that the British colonial authorities established the Nigerian police force to safeguard imperial interests, maintain law and order, and enforce colonial laws. The police force was structured along hierarchical lines with British officers holding senior positions while African constables carried out day-to-day policing duties. This hierarchical structure reflected the colonial administration's paternalistic approach towards policing in Nigeria, where indigenous populations were seen as requiring guidance and control. As colonial rule extended across Nigeria, the police force played a crucial role in pacifying resistance movements, suppressing anti-colonial activities, and quelling local uprisings. The police force was instrumental in enforcing colonial taxation policies, labor recruitment for colonial projects, and maintaining the overall stability of the colonial state. Through a combination of coercion, surveillance, and collaboration with local authorities, the police force acted as a key enforcer of colonial power. Furthermore, the study examines the impact of imperial policing on Nigerian society, including its role in shaping power dynamics, fostering a culture of compliance, and influencing perceptions of law and order. The police force became a symbol of authority and control in colonial Nigeria, shaping perceptions of state power and legitimacy. However, the coercive and authoritarian nature of imperial policing also led to tensions and resistance from local populations, challenging the legitimacy of colonial rule. This research contributes to the existing literature on colonial policing in Nigeria by providing a comprehensive analysis of the emergence and role of the police force in the colonial context. By exploring the dynamics of imperial policing, this study sheds light on the complexities of colonial governance, the exercise of state power, and the interactions between colonial authorities and indigenous populations in Nigeria.
