Abstract
This study investigates the credibility of pump meters in filling stations, with a focus on the case study of NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) outlets. The accuracy and reliability of pump meters are crucial in ensuring fair transactions between consumers and fuel retailers. The research assesses the factors influencing the credibility of pump meters, such as maintenance practices, calibration procedures, and regulatory oversight. A mixed-methods approach is employed, combining quantitative data analysis of pump meter readings with qualitative assessments of maintenance records and regulatory compliance. Data collection includes on-site inspections of pump meters at NNPC filling stations, interviews with station managers, and analysis of historical data on pump meter accuracy. Preliminary findings suggest that while the majority of pump meters at NNPC outlets are within acceptable tolerances, there are instances of discrepancies that raise concerns about the accuracy of fuel dispensing. Factors such as irregular maintenance schedules, inadequate calibration practices, and limited regulatory enforcement contribute to potential inaccuracies in pump meter readings. The study highlights the importance of regular maintenance and calibration of pump meters to ensure their credibility and accuracy in fuel dispensing. Recommendations include implementing stricter maintenance protocols, enhancing regulatory oversight, and increasing consumer awareness about pump meter accuracy. By shedding light on the credibility of pump meters at NNPC filling stations, this research contributes to the ongoing dialogue on consumer protection and fair trade practices in the petroleum industry. The findings offer insights for policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders to improve monitoring mechanisms and uphold standards of accuracy in fuel transactions. Overall, this study underscores the significance of pump meter credibility in maintaining trust between consumers and fuel retailers.
