Abstract
This thesis focuses on investigating the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating musculoskeletal disorders in horses. Musculoskeletal disorders are common among horses and can significantly impact their performance and overall well-being. Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine practice, has been increasingly used in veterinary medicine to alleviate pain and improve musculoskeletal function in animals. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the specific benefits of acupuncture in treating musculoskeletal disorders in horses. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the efficacy of acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention for various musculoskeletal conditions in horses. The research will be conducted using a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A systematic review of existing literature will be conducted to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on acupuncture in equine musculoskeletal health. This review will encompass studies on the physiological mechanisms of acupuncture, its potential benefits, and any reported adverse effects. In addition to the literature review, a clinical trial will be carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating specific musculoskeletal disorders in horses. A sample of horses diagnosed with various musculoskeletal conditions will undergo acupuncture treatment over a specified period. Objective measures such as lameness scores, range of motion, and performance assessments will be used to evaluate the outcomes of the treatment. Furthermore, qualitative data will be collected through interviews with veterinary acupuncturists and horse owners to gain insights into their perspectives on the use of acupuncture in equine musculoskeletal health. The interviews will explore factors such as treatment protocols, perceived benefits, challenges, and overall satisfaction with acupuncture therapy. The findings of this study are expected to contribute valuable insights into the efficacy of acupuncture as a treatment modality for musculoskeletal disorders in horses. By combining scientific evidence with practitioner and owner experiences, this research aims to provide a holistic understanding of the benefits and limitations of acupuncture in equine musculoskeletal health. The results of this study will have practical implications for veterinary practitioners, horse owners, and the broader equine industry, potentially leading to improved treatment outcomes and enhanced welfare for horses with musculoskeletal issues.
