Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The phenomenon of urban heat islands (UHIs) has become a pressing issue in urban areas due to the adverse effects on human health, energy consumption, and overall urban climate. In response to this challenge, green infrastructure has been increasingly recognized as a sustainable solution to mitigate the UHI effect and enhance urban resilience. This thesis investigates the impact of green infrastructure on reducing the UHI effect in city centers through a comprehensive analysis of various green infrastructure strategies, their effectiveness, and implications for urban planning and design. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms related to green infrastructure and UHI effect. The literature review in Chapter 2 explores ten key themes related to green infrastructure and its role in mitigating the UHI effect, drawing on existing research and case studies to provide a comprehensive overview of current knowledge in the field. Chapter 3 details the research methodology employed in this study, including the research design, data collection methods, analysis techniques, and limitations of the research approach. The methodology section also discusses the selection of case study cities and the criteria used to assess the impact of green infrastructure on the UHI effect. In Chapter 4, the findings of the research are presented and analyzed in detail, focusing on the effectiveness of different green infrastructure strategies in reducing urban heat islands in city centers. The discussion includes an evaluation of the strengths and limitations of each strategy, as well as recommendations for urban planners and policymakers to enhance the implementation of green infrastructure in urban areas. Finally, Chapter 5 provides a summary of the research findings, conclusions drawn from the study, implications for urban planning practice, and recommendations for future research in the field. The thesis concludes with reflections on the significance of green infrastructure in addressing the UHI effect and its potential to create more sustainable and resilient city centers. Overall, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on green infrastructure and its role in mitigating the UHI effect, offering valuable insights for urban planners, policymakers, and researchers seeking to create healthier and more sustainable urban environments.
