Thesis Abstract

The interpretative function of costume in theater plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall aesthetic and communicative elements of a production. This study focuses on the analysis of the interpretative function of costume design in a specific theater production, namely THA 303. By examining the relationship between costumes and the characters they represent, this research aims to explore how costume design influences the audience's perception and understanding of the characters and the narrative. Through a case study approach, this research delves into the intricate details of the costume design in THA 303 production, analyzing the choices made by the costume designer in relation to the characters' personalities, backgrounds, and roles in the play. The study investigates how costume elements such as color, texture, style, and accessories are utilized to convey specific messages and evoke certain emotions in the audience. By closely examining the costume design process and its impact on the overall production, this research aims to shed light on the creative and interpretative aspects of costume in theater arts. Furthermore, this study explores the collaboration between costume designers, directors, and actors in bringing the characters to life through costume. It examines the communication and exchange of ideas between these key stakeholders to ensure that the costumes effectively convey the desired character traits and thematic elements of the play. By analyzing the collaborative process involved in costume design, this research seeks to highlight the importance of teamwork and creative synergy in producing a successful theater production. In addition, this research investigates the historical and cultural influences on costume design in THA 303 production, exploring how the costumes reflect the time period, setting, and socio-cultural context of the play. By examining the historical accuracy and cultural authenticity of the costumes, this study aims to assess the effectiveness of costume design in creating a believable and immersive theatrical experience for the audience. Overall, this research contributes to the understanding of the interpretative function of costume in theater arts by providing insights into the creative process, collaborative dynamics, and cultural influences involved in costume design. By analyzing the specific case of THA 303 production, this study offers valuable perspectives on the significance of costume in enhancing the visual and narrative elements of theater plays.
