Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Urban heat islands (UHIs) have become a critical issue in urban areas worldwide due to their adverse impacts on human health, energy consumption, and overall urban environment quality. This thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of UHIs using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to understand the spatial distribution, temporal dynamics, and influencing factors of UHIs in urban settings. The primary objective of this research is to provide valuable insights into UHIs for urban planners, policymakers, and researchers to develop effective mitigation strategies and sustainable urban planning practices. The study begins with an introduction that outlines the background of UHIs, presents the problem statement, defines the objectives, discusses the limitations and scope of the study, highlights the significance of the research, and provides an overview of the thesis structure. Chapter two presents a detailed literature review covering ten key areas related to UHIs, including the definition of UHIs, factors contributing to UHIs, impacts of UHIs, and previous studies on UHI analysis using remote sensing and GIS techniques. Chapter three focuses on the research methodology and includes a description of the study area, data collection methods, remote sensing and GIS techniques employed, data preprocessing steps, spatial analysis procedures, and statistical methods used for data interpretation. The chapter also discusses the selection of indicators for UHI analysis and the development of UHI mapping techniques. Chapter four presents an in-depth discussion of the findings obtained from the UHI analysis, including spatial patterns of UHIs, temporal variations in UHI intensity, relationships between UHIs and land use/land cover types, and identification of UHI hotspots in the study area. The chapter also explores the factors influencing UHI formation and provides insights into the potential strategies for UHI mitigation in urban environments. Finally, chapter five presents the conclusion and summary of the thesis, highlighting the key findings, discussing the implications of the research, and proposing recommendations for future studies in the field of UHI analysis using remote sensing and GIS techniques. The research contributes to the existing knowledge on UHIs and provides a valuable resource for urban planners and policymakers to address the challenges posed by UHIs in urban areas. Keywords Urban heat islands, Remote sensing, Geographic Information System, Spatial analysis, Mitigation strategies, Sustainable urban planning.
