Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The role of a secretary in any organization is crucial as they serve as the primary point of contact between the organization and external parties. In Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri, new secretaries face various challenges that hinder their effective performance. This research project aims to explore and analyze the problems faced by new secretaries in the institution. The study utilizes a qualitative research approach, specifically conducting in-depth interviews with new secretaries in Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri. The data collected is analyzed thematically to identify common issues and challenges faced by these individuals. The findings reveal several key problems that new secretaries encounter, including inadequate training, overwhelming workload, lack of mentorship, and poor communication within the institution. Inadequate training emerged as a significant challenge for new secretaries, as many reported feeling ill-prepared to handle their responsibilities upon assuming their roles. This lack of proper training not only affects their performance but also contributes to feelings of insecurity and job dissatisfaction. Additionally, the overwhelming workload experienced by new secretaries further compounds these issues, leading to stress and burnout. Another critical issue identified in this study is the lack of mentorship for new secretaries in Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri. Without guidance from experienced professionals, new secretaries struggle to navigate the complex organizational dynamics and protocols within the institution. This absence of mentorship also hinders their professional development and growth in their roles. Furthermore, poor communication within the institution was highlighted as a key problem faced by new secretaries. Inadequate communication channels and unclear instructions make it challenging for new secretaries to perform their duties effectively. This lack of effective communication not only hampers their productivity but also creates misunderstandings and conflicts in the workplace. In conclusion, the problems faced by new secretaries in Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri are multifaceted and require immediate attention. Addressing these challenges through comprehensive training programs, mentorship initiatives, and improved communication strategies is essential to support the professional development and well-being of new secretaries in the institution.
