Abstract
This thesis explores the significant role that pilgrimage plays in fostering interfaith dialogue and understanding. The phenomenon of pilgrimage has been a longstanding tradition in various religious and cultural contexts, serving as a powerful means of spiritual enrichment, cultural exchange, and communal bonding. In recent times, pilgrimage has also emerged as a platform for interfaith engagement, offering opportunities for individuals from different religious backgrounds to come together, interact, and learn from one another. The study begins with an in-depth examination of the historical and cultural background of pilgrimage practices across different religions, highlighting the common themes and unique aspects that shape the experience of pilgrims. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, the thesis identifies key factors that contribute to the potential of pilgrimage as a catalyst for interfaith dialogue, including shared rituals, sacred sites, and the transformative nature of the pilgrimage journey. Methodologically, the research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews, surveys, and observational data to investigate the experiences and perceptions of pilgrims engaged in interfaith dialogue during their pilgrimage journeys. The research methodology also includes a comparative analysis of pilgrimage practices in different religious traditions, shedding light on the similarities and differences in how pilgrimage fosters interfaith understanding. The findings of the study reveal that pilgrimage serves as a unique space for interfaith dialogue, offering opportunities for participants to engage in meaningful conversations, share their beliefs and practices, and develop mutual respect and understanding.
