Abstract
The senior secondary education curriculum plays a crucial role in shaping the knowledge, skills, and competencies of students before they transition into higher education or the workforce. However, the implementation of this curriculum is fraught with various issues that impact its effectiveness and relevance. This research project aims to investigate the key implementation issues in senior secondary education curriculum and explore potential solutions to address these challenges. One of the primary issues identified in the implementation of senior secondary education curriculum is the lack of alignment between the curriculum and the needs of the students. The curriculum may not always be designed to meet the diverse learning styles, interests, and career aspirations of students, leading to disengagement and low motivation among learners. This lack of alignment can result in a gap between the knowledge and skills acquired through the curriculum and the requirements of higher education institutions or the job market. Another significant issue in the implementation of senior secondary education curriculum is the inadequate training and support provided to teachers. Teachers play a critical role in delivering the curriculum effectively and facilitating student learning. However, many teachers may not receive sufficient training on the curriculum content, pedagogical approaches, or assessment strategies. This lack of training can hinder teachers' ability to engage students, differentiate instruction, and provide timely feedback, impacting the overall quality of education. Furthermore, the availability and quality of resources also pose challenges to the implementation of senior secondary education curriculum. Schools may lack access to up-to-date textbooks, technology tools, laboratory equipment, or other resources necessary to deliver the curriculum effectively. Inadequate resources can limit students' exposure to practical learning experiences, experimental activities, or real-world applications, constraining their ability to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills. Additionally, issues related to assessment and evaluation practices can impact the implementation of senior secondary education curriculum. Traditional assessment methods such as standardized tests or exams may not always align with the objectives of the curriculum or accurately measure students' knowledge and skills. Moreover, the emphasis on high-stakes testing can create a culture of rote memorization and surface learning, rather than promoting deep understanding and application of concepts. In conclusion, addressing the implementation issues in senior secondary education curriculum requires a comprehensive approach that considers the alignment of the curriculum with student needs, the professional development of teachers, the availability of resources, and the evaluation practices. By identifying and addressing these challenges, policymakers, educators, and stakeholders can work together to enhance the quality and relevance of senior secondary education for all students.

INTRODUCTION

This paper examined implementation issues in the new senior secondary education curriculum in Nigeria. It discussed the concept curriculum implementation.

It enumerated the objectives of secondary education as indicated in National Policy on Education. Implementation issues in the new senior secondary education curriculum were highlighted and discussed. The prospects were pointed out and its implication for Nigeria’s cultural policy itemized.

Recommendations were made such as the facilities and ICT equipment necessary for effective implementation of the new curriculum should be adequately provided in schools and government should provide adequate number of qualified subject teachers to handle effectively all the new subjects.
