Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis explores the effects of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on anxiety levels among college students. Anxiety is a prevalent mental health concern among college students, impacting their academic performance, social interactions, and overall well-being. Mindfulness-based interventions have gained recognition for their potential in reducing anxiety and enhancing psychological resilience. This study investigates the impact of an MBSR program on anxiety levels in a sample of college students. The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative measures such as standardized anxiety assessments with qualitative data from participant interviews. A pre-test/post-test design was used to evaluate changes in anxiety levels before and after the MBSR intervention. The study participants were recruited from a university setting and engaged in an eight-week MBSR program consisting of mindfulness meditation, body scan exercises, and mindful movement practices. The findings of this study suggest that participation in the MBSR program led to a significant reduction in anxiety levels among college students. Quantitative analysis revealed a statistically significant decrease in anxiety scores post-intervention, indicating the effectiveness of MBSR in alleviating anxiety symptoms. Qualitative data further supported these results, highlighting themes of increased self-awareness, emotion regulation, and stress management among participants. The implications of these findings are significant for college counseling services, mental health practitioners, and educators working with student populations. Integrating mindfulness-based interventions like MBSR into college curricula and mental health support services may offer a valuable tool for addressing anxiety and promoting student well-being. Future research directions could explore the long-term effects of MBSR on anxiety levels, as well as the potential benefits of mindfulness training in diverse college settings. In conclusion, this thesis provides empirical evidence supporting the efficacy of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in reducing anxiety levels among college students. By cultivating mindfulness skills and awareness, students may develop resilience to stressors and enhance their overall mental health. This study contributes to the growing body of research on mindfulness interventions in educational settings and underscores the importance of holistic approaches to student well-being.
