This thesis explores the impact of social media on political participation and engagement in democracies. The rapid growth and widespread use of social media platforms have transformed the landscape of political communication, providing new opportunities for citizens to engage in political processes. This study aims to investigate how social media influences political participation and engagement within democratic societies, focusing on both the potential benefits and challenges associated with this digital phenomenon. The introduction sets the stage by providing background information on the rise of social media and its increasing role in shaping political discourse. The problem statement highlights the need to understand the implications of social media on political participation, especially in the context of democratic systems. The objectives of the study are to examine the various ways in which social media can impact political engagement, identify the limitations of current research in this area, and explore the scope of the study in different democratic settings. A comprehensive literature review in Chapter Two presents a critical analysis of existing studies on social media and political participation. The review covers ten key themes, including the influence of social media on voter turnout, political polarization, citizen empowerment, and the spread of misinformation.
