Abstract
The rise of social media platforms has transformed the landscape of political discourse and participation, presenting both opportunities and challenges for individuals, political actors, and society at large. This thesis explores the impact of social media on political discourse and participation, with a focus on how these platforms have reshaped the way individuals engage with political issues, interact with political actors, and participate in the democratic process. Through a comprehensive literature review, this study examines the various ways in which social media has influenced political communication, information dissemination, and citizen engagement. Chapter one provides an introduction to the topic, offering a background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. Chapter two features a detailed literature review that explores ten key themes related to the impact of social media on political discourse and participation. These themes include the role of social media in shaping political opinions, the impact of filter bubbles and echo chambers on political discourse, the influence of social media on political mobilization and activism, and the challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation on these platforms. Chapter three outlines the research methodology employed in this study, including the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, and data analysis procedures. The chapter also discusses ethical considerations and limitations of the research methodology. Chapter four presents a comprehensive discussion of the findings, analyzing the various ways in which social media has influenced political discourse and participation based on the research conducted.
