Social media platforms have become integral tools in shaping political discourse and influencing public opinion in democracies around the world. This study examines the impact of social media on political polarization within democratic societies. The rapid proliferation of social media has transformed the way individuals engage with political information and interact with others holding differing viewpoints, leading to increased polarization along ideological lines. Through a comprehensive literature review, this thesis explores the various ways in which social media contributes to political polarization, including echo chambers, filter bubbles, and the spread of misinformation. The research methodology section outlines the approach taken to investigate the relationship between social media use and political polarization. Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods, this study analyzes data from surveys, interviews, and content analysis of social media platforms. The findings reveal the extent to which social media exacerbates political polarization by reinforcing pre-existing biases, limiting exposure to diverse perspectives, and fostering a climate of hostility and division. The discussion of findings delves into the implications of these findings for democratic governance and social cohesion. By highlighting the role of social media in shaping political attitudes and behavior, this study underscores the need for greater awareness of the risks posed by online echo chambers and filter bubbles. The conclusion offers insights into potential strategies to mitigate the negative effects of social media on political polarization, including media literacy programs, algorithmic transparency, and platform regulation.
