Abstract
The civil service in Nigeria has long been plagued by issues of ineffectiveness and inefficiency, with Akwa Ibom State serving as a notable case study. This research project aims to delve into the root causes of the challenges facing the civil service in Akwa Ibom State and explore potential solutions to enhance its performance. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive analysis. Data will be gathered through interviews with key stakeholders in the civil service, including government officials, civil servants, and members of the public. Additionally, surveys and questionnaires will be distributed to gather quantitative data on the perceptions and experiences of civil servants and the general public regarding the effectiveness and efficiency of the civil service in Akwa Ibom State. The research will focus on identifying key factors contributing to the ineffectiveness and inefficiency of the civil service in Akwa Ibom State, including issues such as bureaucratic red tape, corruption, inadequate resources, lack of accountability, and political interference. By examining these factors, the study aims to provide insights into the systemic challenges that hinder the civil service from fulfilling its mandate effectively. Furthermore, the project will explore potential strategies and interventions to address these challenges and improve the performance of the civil service in Akwa Ibom State. This will involve examining best practices from other jurisdictions and drawing lessons that can be applied to the context of Akwa Ibom State. Recommendations will be developed based on the findings of the research, with the aim of informing policy decisions and reforms that can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the civil service. Overall, this research project seeks to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the challenges facing the civil service in Nigeria, with a specific focus on Akwa Ibom State. By identifying the root causes of ineffectiveness and inefficiency and proposing practical solutions, the study aims to provide valuable insights that can inform efforts to reform and improve the civil service in the state, ultimately leading to better service delivery and governance for the benefit of the citizens.
