Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has rapidly advanced in recent years, leading to the development of autonomous systems that can make decisions and take actions without direct human intervention. As AI systems become more sophisticated and pervasive in various aspects of society, questions regarding the ethical implications of their actions and the allocation of moral responsibility and accountability have become increasingly urgent. This thesis aims to explore these ethical issues surrounding AI technology, with a focus on understanding how moral responsibility and accountability can be attributed to autonomous systems. The introduction sets the stage by discussing the background of AI technology and its rapid growth, highlighting the need for ethical considerations in the development and deployment of autonomous systems. The problem statement identifies the lack of clear guidelines on how to address moral responsibility and accountability in AI systems, while the objectives of the study aim to provide a comprehensive analysis of these issues. The limitations of the study are also acknowledged, along with the scope of the research, which focuses on the ethical implications of AI technology in various domains. The literature review chapter critically examines existing research on AI ethics, moral responsibility, and accountability, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge in the field. Drawing on a wide range of sources, the literature review identifies key debates and gaps in the literature, setting the stage for the subsequent chapters. The research methodology chapter outlines the approach taken in this study, including the research design, data collection methods, and analytical techniques used to investigate the ethical implications of AI technology. The chapter also discusses ethical considerations in conducting research on sensitive topics such as AI ethics. The discussion of findings chapter presents the results of the study, analyzing how moral responsibility and accountability can be attributed to autonomous systems in different contexts. Drawing on empirical data and theoretical insights, this chapter provides a nuanced analysis of the ethical challenges posed by AI technology and offers recommendations for addressing these issues.
